ART LESSON 1 SHADING by Ricky-Roo302 ART LESSON 1 SHADING by Ricky-Roo302
..I have recently been working toward being certified as "Artist In Residence" in the city of Kodiak, allowing me to go into classrooms and teach art and music to the little rug rats. Here is my first art lesson for 5th graders, an example of simple shading techniques with pencil. This will be immediately followed with (...by popular request, mind you...) "HOW TO DRAW DINOSAURS AND UNICORNS". What a cool group of 5th graders!!!
Please feel free to copy-paste-and print out this tutorial if you wish.....

Great job! Have you ever considered writing a whole Art tutorial-book? I would loooove to shamelessly steal your coloring techniques...

I always had a problem when it come light source. For some reason I can never decide where the light is coming from. Nice tutorial by the way. I'm gonna have to print this out and hand it to my nephew for him practice on.

....I learned from my hero Will Eisner that, aside from simply making a better drawing, how you light a scene is critical to the mood you are trying to convey. This is evident in noir films like detective movies and of course horror films...

Thanks for the Fave; you could not have left me a kinder comment.

Will Eisner?? I think I remember hearing that name in a comic book documentary I've seen a few years ago on the history channel.

I may have start looking into noir film. hopefully it'll give me a better understanding on how to use light source.

....thank you! This is very much on the elementary level so as not to frustrate a student who might have difficulty rendering the gradient shades. I hope it goes over well, but mostly I hope it excites the burgeoning artist to a new level....

...if I am able to just hook a couple of them I will be happy.
...Carole, I would like very much to have a dialog with you about art and music and my beliefs and opinions on the subject matter (...to which I have given endless thought, and to which you would respond with your own views, whether in agreement or not...), if you be interested in a short discussion, with the possibility of posting our thoughts as a Journal.....are ya game...?

we're surrounded by thick smoke nearly every night :tears: and the :onfire: is creeping over the Arizona border as we speak - zero contained so it's going to be a very long hot summer :tears:

even our campgrounds were evacuated because of :onfire: several weeks ago - different :onfire: but same results :tears: no moisture of any kind for months and months and months :faint:

and you? long time no hear :glomp: how's the world treating you ? i'm  ready for another Beary Bears episode

....hey---I'm back; sorry it has taken me so long to reply.
...has the breathing air become any better outside of your door? I'm following the story of the fire (because I'm a newshound).
...as for me, I have been in an artistic funk because the feature newspaper that printed BEARY TAILS ceased publishing; they weren't making any money (just breaking even) and it was basically a part-time project of the guy who put it together and was taking too much time away from family etc for an endeavor that was showing showing no income. So of course I was a bit angry but more heartbroken about losing that community showcase for a strip that I really put my heart into; however, after brooding about it for a few weeks I finally rationalized that posting the strips on DA probably brought me exposure to a much bigger audience than the population of Kodiak.
...anyway, I do have one more strip to download---I have been nagging my daughter to get it colored for weeks, and it is now just about ready. It's funny---I had the strip written and drawn , inks completely done, before I got the bad news about the paper folding, and as you will see, the very last word balloon (spoken by Kody) proves to be prophetic as to what was to come....
...that said, I'm out of my funk and ready to draw again. I have a million ideas---just need to sit down and do them. In fact, while doing the strip I always kept about three scripts ahead, so I have more BEARY TAILS to tell, definitely. I've invested too much of my heart and soul into these stories to let them fade away. The problem is getting my daughter motivated to do her part now that there is no "deadline"...
...for now, on to other things. I have some humorous drawings in my head that I think you will really like, Carole, and it's time I got off my butt and got creative again, if nothing else than for my own self esteem and disposition, y'know?
...that's the way the world has been treating me, my dear friend. I got kicked in the fanny and my little feelings got stepped on, but now my fanny is all better and I'm ready to get off of it and get busy. Stand by.....

Thanks---my hope is to show that you can take simple "coloring book" line art and really give it life with a simple pencil. Applying the same "light source" technique with crayons can really take that coloring book to a new level....

..., as I live and breathe, you can sure come up with some cool references, Kate. Who could ever have thought that this little study of light source and shading would remind someone of The Great Pumpkin!!! You definitely view the world through the eyes of an artist, my dear friend, and that is why you are at the TIPPY-TOP of my "AWESOME HUMANS" list....
....I'm off to find my security blanket....

..Jasmin, you don't need ME to demonstrate how to light an art piece; you continually out-do yourself with each new canvass, and you clearly have an excellent understanding of light and shadow...
....but I'll take the compliment, anyway!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
