Description

...here in my adopted hometown of Kodiak there is an annual event called a "Chocolate Lovers/ Halibut Tail Auction, and this year I was honored to be chosen as one of 14 artists to provide artwork on a mold/cast of an actual halibut tail. The halibut that this mold was taken from was a fairly large critter, and this tail measures about 19 inches tall---lots of room on which to paint, or in my case, draw.
...I used mixed media, 95 per cent Prisma colored pencil, with a dash of ink and white watercolor. Most of the participating artists usually do something Alaska-oriented (eagles, fishing boats, bears, etc...), but I thought I would try something a bit different; the fan of the fish tail immediately suggested to me the drapery of a skirt, and this was the result. Also, almost all other artists put the fin at the top---that is, upside down to what I have done here....so I hope my Halibut will be unique and will receive a good price at auction.....
I still have to do the opposite side of the tail; I'll post that when it's done.
..I will also post a couple of close-ups of this piece for those interested to have a better look at the dancer and guitar player...

EDIT: Here is the other side of the Halibut Tail....

I love the idea of art on a halibut tail! :D And you're right: the shape of the tail suggests a skirt - something that you've seemed to use in your favour. Beautiful work, Ric.
