FLAMENCO by Ricky-Roo302 FLAMENCO by Ricky-Roo302
...here in my adopted hometown of Kodiak there is an annual event called a "Chocolate Lovers/ Halibut Tail Auction, and this year I was honored to be chosen as one of 14 artists to provide artwork on a mold/cast of an actual halibut tail. The halibut that this mold was taken from was a fairly large critter, and this tail measures about 19 inches tall---lots of room on which to paint, or in my case, draw.
...I used mixed media, 95 per cent Prisma colored pencil, with a dash of ink and white watercolor. Most of the participating artists usually do something Alaska-oriented (eagles, fishing boats, bears, etc...), but I thought I would try something a bit different; the fan of the fish tail immediately suggested to me the drapery of a skirt, and this was the result. Also, almost all other artists put the fin at the top---that is, upside down to what I have done here....so I hope my Halibut will be unique and will receive a good price at auction.....
I still have to do the opposite side of the tail; I'll post that when it's done.
..I will also post a couple of close-ups of this piece for those interested to have a better look at the dancer and guitar player...

EDIT: Here is the other side of the Halibut Tail....

I love the idea of art on a halibut tail! :D And you're right: the shape of the tail suggests a skirt - something that you've seemed to use in your favour. Beautiful work, Ric.

...thanks, Darth---I'm reasonably happy with the piece, although I had to put in the rose because the composition was lousy without it. That Halibut tail made it all the way to Spain---someone bought it on E-Bay as a gift for his mother who lives there; pretty cool!!

Colorful and full of motion, I love it! The contrast with the other side of the tail, both in colors, theme and setting is just geniusilicious. Yes, that's a word, I swear.

Wow this is very good!
It is awesome! I think it must be very difficult to draw on an objekt like this, right?

Ahhhh now I get what these are! Oh my god these are amazing. The detail, the colors, love how this one with the red dress. The frills look fantastic and the rose beauteous to the eye. The guitarist makes it all seem like it's a shot out of reality. Wish I could buy one of these. They are truly masterpieces Rick! :)

I don't even know what to say, really. The shape of the dress within the tail was an awesome idea! The colors are beautiful, too! Good luck with the auction!

Who knew a halibut could be so elegant? :D

THANK YOU very much!!! It is indeed a challenge to compose artwork around limited parameters, rather than the square/rectangle etc. of the typical canvas....
I have to do the opposite side of the halibut tail as well, so I am once more endeavoring to draw to this interesting plane...but I have something in mind.

Will it be something completely differnet or will it be again related to dancing and/or Spain? Ok, I am being too curious here...I'll just wait for you to post the B-side of the Halibut...;)

...THANK YOU CAROLE!!!
....I know what you mean....I sure my watchers have begun to think I've become a one-trick pony---all I can do is draw cartoon critters; I must put a stop to that immediately and find time to draw something besides bears in suspenders...

...and just as a teaser for you, the opposite side of this fishtail will be titled "FATHER AND DAUGHTER"...

THANK YOU ENDLESSLY for keeping an eye on me, my dear friend ----RC

Very nice! Especially the use of what space the halibut tail provides in the peculiar shape that it is (somehow, it makes me hungry from some beer battered halibut at the same time...).
