Dear Mrs. ____________

It is with sincere regret that I inform you of the tragic and untimely death of your son PFC ______________.

On September 17, 2006, while traveling from Baghdad to Tikrit on a mission to deliver fresh water and medical supplies, he and members of his unit were ambushed by Iraqi insurgents. The vehicle in which he rode with three members of his company sustained fire from a Rocket Propelled Grenade. There were no survivors.

There are no words that I could possibly say to ease the sorrow and grief that you now must be experiencing, but I want you to know that Private __________ was a proud and exemplary marine, well liked by his Commanding Officer and the soldiers of his platoon. He believed deeply in the mission here in Iraq and he fought bravely and died heroically for the cause of Liberty and Freedom.

If you wish, arrangements will be made for your son to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery here in Washington, DC with full Military Honors. In this, your time of loss, may I extend to you the deepest condolences of our Commander In Chief and of the United States Military.

Yours very sincerely,
Major General ________________

Such anguish and heartbreak, as any mother would be at the loss of her child. I am very proud of our military and I thank each one out there for our freedom. I even make it a point to call my Dad on Veterans Day to thank him for his service, and for making it home safely (otherwise I wouldn't even be here today).

Some mothers were not, or will not be, so blessed.

Thank you, Ric, for yet another moving piece!
